Sunday Service. UUs filled the large ballroom at the Del Mar Marriott Hotel for the Sunday (April 27) Service during District Assembly, and San Diegans were very much a part of the gathering.

Rev. Dr. Beth Johnson of Palomar UU Fellowship and Rev. Dr. Tom Owen-Towle, interim minister of UU Fellowship of San Dieguito, conducted the Call to Worship, and then led a three-part service called Weaving the Tapestry of the Beloved Community. During this moving ceremony, each person was given a colorful piece of yarn, and the weaver during the service was Barbara McLaughlin of Palomar UU Fellowship.

Other San Diegans were also involved in the Service: Asa Puckette, a member of the YRUU group at San Dieguito lit the chalice; Home, the choir anthem by John Schulz of Chalice UU Congregation, was arranged by Tim McKnight, Director of Music at Chalice, and performed by the Chalice Choir. Sharilyn Parr, president of San Dieguito, and Dan Stracka, president of Palomar, did the Antiphonal Reading.

We Are One was performed by the combined choirs of Chalice, Palomar and San Dieguito, and directed by Tim McKnight. Carol and Rob Molek of Chalice spoke during the Service about San Diego Food Not Lawns, the DA Service Project, and drumming during the offertory was performed by children and youth, and led by Stuart Holmes, Religious Education Director at Chalice.

Thanks also went to Caroline Celia, Music Director of Palomar; Kimberly Lilley, Choir Director of Palomar, and Brad Wiscons for the PowerPoint presentation.

Generous Support. Anne Larocca and other environmental leaders around the Cluster were responsible for arranging to have San Diego Food Not Lawns (SDFNL) designated as the Service Project during District Assembly. "I'm thrilled to report that the service collection (on April 27) brought in $2,047.00 for SDFNL, divided equally between cash and checks to Activist San Diego," Anne of UU Fellowship of San Dieguito e-mailed. "I know FNL will use the money well. I plan to be active in the North County FNL group and will report back to CIAO (Cluster Inreach and Outreach) as plans unfold. It's been a great weekend (at District Assembly)." SDFNL was one of several vendors set up at DA last month.

Candidates. Rev. Dr. Laurel Hallman, senior minister of First Unitarian Church of Dallas, and Rev. Peter Morales, senior minister of Jefferson Unitarian Church in Golden, Colorado, are candidates to succeed UUA President Bill Sinkford. Both candidates had literature in the vendors area at DA. The election occurs during the 2009 General Assembly in Salt Lake City.

Memorial Service. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday (May 10) at 2 p.m. at Palomar UU Fellowship for Art Hulbert, a founder of the Fellowship. According to an e-mail from Rev. Dr. Beth Johnson of Palomar, “Art was killed by a car Monday evening (April 14) as he walked home from his weekly square dancing outing. He was an active and lively 92 years old and he will be missed.”

Time Magazine. The April 14 issue of Time magazine has the first of two ads that will run as part of Phase II of Unitarian Universalism's National Marketing Campaign. The second will appear in the May 12 issue on newsstands May 2.
