Early years. Grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Moved to San Diego in 1950 following graduation from college and nine years after her parents moved here.

How long a UU. Third generation but really became involved with UUism as a student at the University of Michigan.

Education. Studied American Literature at the University of Michigan and later earned an M.A. in English.

Career. Authored her first novel in 1965 while at Camp de Benneville Pines. On the staff of the Big Sister Homes for seven years during which she continued to write, including articles for Redbook and as a ghostwriter. In 2003 began writing feminist stories with UU heroines. Led the writing group at First Church for 30 years before switching to Summit to be nearer her Spring Valley home.

Dinner guests. The scientists who narrate those fascinating TV science shows.

Tidbit. For two years during the early 1960's was the first Director of Religious Education at First Church.

Breaking News

Prop 8 Trial. Final arguments are being heard today in the Prop 8 trial in San Francisco of Perry v. Schwarzenegger. Check out the Prop 8 Tracker LIVE blog (http://prop8trialtracker.com). The Prop 8 Tracker website has a Key Names / Players link. A decision is expected later this summer.

Choir Director. Summit UU Fellowship in Santee is looking for a Choir Director after Susan Simpson stepped down in anticipation of her move to Tucson. Interested persons should contact Music Chair Ed Henry at ehenry@mail.sdsu.edu. Summit's choir rehearses weekly and performs twice monthly. The salary ranges from $3,000.00 to $3,500.00 depending on experience.

Pride Parade. David Doan of First Church is lining up a trolley for UUs riding in the Pride Parade on Saturday, July 17, in Hillcrest. At Summit UU Fellowship, Gwen Baldwin, is looking for UUs from throughout San Diego County who are interested in joining the colorful and talented parasol team. You can contact Gwen at gwenbaldwin@gmail.com. This year's UU entry in the parade might be the largest yet. Women Together. The cost of the Annual UU Women Together Retreat is $130.00 between July 1 and August 15; after that it's $150. The cost includes a shared room, food, all workshops and activities. The retreat will be held September 24-26 at Camp Stevens in Julian and is open to all women in the San Diego Cluster and Pacific Southwest District. This year's theme is "Spirit in Body, Spirit in Play." For information contact Benita Berkson at 4benita@cox.net.
