Moving
On by Dea Shelton of Chalice UU Congregation in Escondido.
There was only one service on Sunday, June
27, as Chalice UU Congregation in Escondido, celebrated
the ministry of
Margo McKenna
Brower, who retired to begin a new chapter in her
life's journey. The service was titled, “I Have Been
Changed for Good” and
it was clear that it applied to Margo as well as the congregation.
Margo spent nine years with us celebrating our joys, crying
during our sorrows, giving us a hug when needed, and always
selflessly
being there for us.
She cared deeply for each and every one of us. She referred
us to people to find jobs, places to live, and even found us
a spouse or two. It was a day filled with laughter and tears
as we celebrated how she had enriched all our lives.
The congregation moves forward as we begin our Settled Minister
search with a strong foundation left by the love, warmth, and
caring of this wonderful minister.
New Minister. In August, Rev.
Thomas Anastasi begins a one-year
term as Interim Minister at Chalice. He recently retired after
20 years as Senior Minister at Shoreline UU Church in Seattle.
In the meantime, the Ministerial Search Committee continues the
process of seeking a Settled Minister.

Same
Sex Marriage. Dick Eiden's Letter to the Editor supporting same sex marriage appeared
June 30 in the North County Times newspaper:
As president
of the Executive Board at Palomar Unitarian Universalist
Fellowship in Vista, I'm writing to say that
our congregation and our denomination (UUA.org) stand
firmly “on the side of love” in support of same-sex
marriage. A decision in the historic trial of Proposition
8 is expected
soon. Reading Judge Walker's decision should be an educational
experience for all. Both sides were represented by fine lawyers
and Judge Walker gave them an abundant opportunity to present
evidence and arguments.
If
Judge Walker upholds Prop. 8, we will support the campaign
to
remove this injustice from the California Constitution
in the 2012 election. We support the inherent worth and dignity
of every person, and full equality for our LGBT sisters and
brothers. We agree with the California Supreme Court that
marriage is a “fundamental right,” and we believe
there is no rational basis for denying this right to same-gender
couples. In the words of our congregation's 2008 resolution
(read at VistaUU.org), we “support legal recognition
for marriage between members of the same sex, and support
an end to the historic prejudice and discrimination of gay,
lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons.” May it be
so. Dick Eiden
