Memorial Society. The following article was furnished by Russ
Armstead, President of the San Diego Memorial
Society. Thanks
to Paul Marsh of First UU Church for putting us in touch with
Russ.
The San Diego Memorial Society is a
non-profit educational organization that seeks to help people
make decisions
about their funerals.
The Society was begun in 1958 by a group of citizens from the
UU Church in Hillcrest in reaction to the high cost of funerals.
Over the ensuing years thousands of people have joined the
Society in order to get dignified, economical funerals, whether
cremation
or internment. Today the San Diego Memorial Society has arrangements
with nine different mortuaries throughout the county and one
cemetery in National City.
The participating mortuaries and the cemetery have signed agreements
with the Society to treat our members fairly and not force the
purchase of products that are unnecessary. They will not attempt
to encourage members to purchase services beyond that which was
agreed upon between the mortuaries and the Society. At present
we have arrangements with mortuaries for four distinct and all-inclusive
plans: a simple cremation; a cremation with the remains transported
either to a cemetery or for scattering at sea; a simple burial;
and a traditional funeral with embalming, viewing and other services.
In 2010 the overriding purpose of San
Diego Memorial Society is
to inform all citizens of their rights and responsibilities
relating to end of life
issues. To that end, the Society acts somewhat like a better
business bureau to identify mortuaries whose history illustrates
good business practices for all customers. Each mortuary is
vetted for solid performance and monitored for the continuation
of these
qualities.
Our members are given a list of these mortuaries and non-members
can access these businesses via our web site sdmsonline.com. For further information contact the Society at (858) 391-1267
or use the web site.

Breaking News |
Pride
Parade. Thousands of spectators
lined the streets of Hillcrest last Saturday to watch the
annual Pride Parade, one of the most popular summertime events
in San Diego. Here's a report from Gwen Baldwin of Summit
UU Fellowship in Santee.
The Old Town Trolley (arranged by First
UU Church in Hillcrest) was pretty full. Summit had 12 parasol folks, 1 or 2 marchers,
and 4 folks on the trolley. There were also participants
from First Church and its South Bay campus. I got to our
area, practiced our (parasol) routine and then watched the
parade until it was time to hop in with the group. I think
the heat wave kept folks away. I had four cancellations because
of it. Too bad since we ended up with a break in the weather.
I will tell you that it was the fastest moving Pride Parades
I have ever been in. Once we started, we just kept moving
and the cool breeze was wonderful. The crowd was enthusiastic
so the Parasol Team felt appreciated. I am sure the marchers
felt so, too.
Greeting
Visitors. Pat Parlin, Membership Chair at Chalice
UU Congregation in Escondido, doesn't mince words: “Let
us practice Radical Hospitality!” She views all members
as greeters on Sunday morning and offers these thoughts about
making visitors feel welcome. “Do you remember the first
time you visited Chalice? What was your first impression?
Were the people welcoming? Or were they so wrapped up in
doing business that they hardly noticed you were there? Did
you leave the service wanting to come back to learn more?
Or did you decide to try another church that was more friendly?” Next
week: More of Pat's thoughts about being a welcoming
community—words
that could apply to any UU congregation. |
