UU congregations throughout San Diego County are known
for their beautiful gardens. Here's a look at UU Fellowship
of San Dieguito in Solana Beach. Click on the photo
for more photos, including a shot of Jill Ballard tending the vegetable
garden.
Close Up.
Chris Hassett of First
UU Church in Hillcrest.
Early years. Third of five
boys in an Air Force family that lived in New Mexico, Texas,
Florida, Connecticut,
South Dakota
and finally California since high school.
Education. BA from
UC Santa Cruz and a teaching credential from Cal State Stanislaus
with Master's work at San Diego State.
Career. A marketing
guy who's with Education Systems, Inc., makers of higher education
CRM software. Also, a singer-songwriter who's shared the stage
at First Church with lots of talented musicians. After 30 years
of singing, he produced his first CD last year and is working
on his second.
How long a UU. Raised a Unitarian. His first
church
was in Orlando, Florida, after his mom discovered that Adlai
Stevenson was ‘of the faith’ and decided to raise the
boys as Unitarians. “With me, it stuck”.
Key to UU growth
in San Diego County. Telling your friends where to go to find
spiritual
sustenance; bringing friends to programs, concerts and events;
finding ways to partner with other progressive organizations
in the Southland; being absolutely unapologetic about being
a member of a church, and more original music.

Breaking News |
On
to Arizona. San Diego UUs are leaving this morning for
Phoenix to join other UUs who
will be protesting the scheduled implementation tomorrow
of Arizona Senate Bill 1070. For more information contact
Mar Cárdenas of UUs of the South Bay (uusouthbay@firstuusandiego.org). See BBC article here.
Chalice
Minister. In August, Rev. Thomas Anastazi begins
as Interim Minister at Chalice UU Congregation in Escondido.
His first service is scheduled for September 12 on the topic,
“An
Ingathering of Waters.” A one-year search for a Settled
Minister is already under way.
Dear
Abby. Joan Kanter “read a letter from Dear
Abby (in The San Diego Union-Tribune) this morning (Monday,
July
26), wherein a young mother in Arkansas wrote about wanting
to join a church, now that she has a child, for the community,
moral messages, and music, (having benefited from that a
lot as a child), but struggled because she didn't really
believe most of the doctrine.
I thought UU would be the perfect
answer for her, and to my surprise, read on to see that Dear
Abby mentioned Unitarian Universalists by name, even giving
the uua.org website,
as a denomination that ‘has no dogma or creed, and
supports their members in following their own
spiritual paths.’ Nothing like a plug by Dear Abby, to put
us in the mainstream.” Thanks Joan as well as Deena
Tuttle for spotting the item and passing it along. See Dear Abby article here.
Seeking
Work. A Job Seekers Support Group is forming at
First UU Church in Hillcrest and welcomes anyone open to
effective ideas to finding paid employment. When there is
a sufficient number of persons interested, Robert
Ferrill will come to either the Hillcrest or South Bay (or both)
campuses to share his down-to-earth ideas and suggestions.
For more information contact Steve LoCoco at (619) 424-5345
or steveofsd@att.net.
Movie
Night. “A Sea Change trailer.” is a documentary about
ocean acidification as well as the intimate story of a Norwegian-American
family whose heritage is bound up with the sea. It will be
shown on August 5 at 7 p.m. at First UU Church (Bard Hall).
Tesa Pierce and Caroline Behe of Scripps Institution of Oceanography,
will also lead a discussion.
Greeting
Visitors. Last week we shared some thoughts of
Pat Parlin, Membership Chair at Chalice
UU Congregation, about hospitality.
Here's more of what she had to say: “Next
time you attend services, look for the person with the visitor's
name tag and go over and say hello. Find out a little about
them and direct them to a kindred spirit.
Do they have children
who might be interested in Religious Education? Are they
knitters who would enjoy our knitters group? You may say, ‘this
is the job of the Greeters.’ But have you looked
to see how busy the greeters
are just taking care (of) getting everyone into the service
with everything they need each Sunday?
We
advertise ourselves as a Welcoming Congregation. Those
are not just words. That
means we really welcome everyone into our home and our
hearts.” Although
Pat was sharing her thoughts with Chalice, they might apply
to UUs everywhere. |
